Reuters photojournalist Jonathan Ernst captured a striking photo of former President Barack Obama passing on the torch of national office to newly sworn-in Vice President Kamala Harris. Like Obama 12 years ago today, Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian heritage, made history when she was sworn in as the first female, Black, and Asian vice president.
Former President Barack Obama has stated that Trump is responsible for the coup of the Capitol. Trump's relentless lies on the 2020 election incited violence and inspired the insurgency. "History will rightly remember today's violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election, as a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation," Obama said. Obama called on Republicans to cease their support for Trump's effort to overturn the 2020 election result. He added that they must "choose America" according to Business Insider.
Politico and AP are reporting that Joe Biden has found his attorney general. Biden will nominate Judge Merrick Garland as his attorney general. Garland has been a judge on the US Court of Appeals in Washington, DC, since 1997. He began his legal career at the Justice Department under President Jimmy Carter in the 1970s. In March 2016 Pres. Barack Obama nominated him to succeed Antonin Scalia to the Supreme court. His nomination was scuttled after Republicans stonewalled it.
President Donald Trump has routinely lambasted the media as a whole for peddling 'fake news.' However, Business Insider reports Trump has now begun to single out glossy US magazines specifically. That's because while he's been in office, not one has offered his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, a single cover shoot. Friday, Trump retweeted a Breitbart post that said 'elitist snobs in the fashion press' were snubbing the 'most elegant First Lady in American history.' Trump fans have long noticed and lamented the absence of the First Lady from US newsstands. They've often accused the US press of revealing their liberal bias by granting former Michelle Obama 12 cover shoots during her time as First Lady.
