Scotland's First Minister and leader of the SNP Nicola Sturgeon says Boris Johnson has 'no mandate whatsoever to take Scotland out of the European Union', adding she would push for another independence referendum after losing a 2014 vote. SOUNDBITE
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announces the Scottish government will introduce legislation "shortly" as a first step towards another independence referendum to be held by 2021. She adds that she hopes the legislation will be agreed by the end of 2019.
President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker met with First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon in Brussels on Wednesday, as the European Council emergency meeting on the 'Brexit' issue takes place in the Belgian capital. Relations between Scotland and the EU, the 'Brexit' result, as well as the possibility of a second referendum on Scotland’s independence from the UK were expected to top the agenda of the meeting.
Newly elected Scottish National Party leader Humza Yousaf vows to ensure that the party's drive to achieve an independent Scotland is "in fifth gear". The United States hails the EU-British deal to regulate trade rules for Northern Ireland as a chance to "improve the prosperity" across the region, John Kirby, National Security Council spokesman, tells reporters.
