A decade after Sierra Leone's civil war, former persecutors and their victims are learning to live together. To escape the fighting, a third of the population had fled to Freetown. Today, more than one million people live there, most of them in slums, where a cholera epidemic is claiming more victims every day.
Images of several hundred demonstrators marching in Paris to denounce the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip almost six months after the start of the war. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said Saturday that at least 32,000 people have been killed in the territory during the months of war between Israel and Palestinian militants. It added that more than 75,000 people have been wounded in the Gaza Strip since the war began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7. IMAGES

In the wake of Saturday's fatal knife attack in Paris, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has come out in favour of "psychiatric care orders that could be granted to police prefects" for "a those involved in radical Islam and who suffer from mental illness. A German tourist was fatally stabbed cloes to the Eiffel tower on Saturday and two other people wounded in the attack. The attacker was a Frenchman in his mid-20s born to a non-religious Iranian family but who had already done prison time for planning an attack and was known to the authorities as an Islamist radical with mental issues.
