On Saturday, Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz said he would object to the certification of Electoral College votes on Wednesday. Pres. Elect Joe Biden won the race in November. Trump and a number of his Republican allies have refused to accept the results. Business Insider reports the GOP have used baseless claims of widespread voter fraud. A number of other senators are expected to join Cruz, according to Axios. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri has already said he planned to object to the certification next week. Fox News reports that Hawley's effort is separate.
Outgoing US Attorney General Bill Barr most likely infuriated President Donald Trump even more on Monday. That's when he said he wouldn't be appointing special counsels to investigate either President-elect Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden or election fraud Business Insider reports Trump has reportedly pushed for conservative attorney Sidney Powell as a special prosecutor to investigate the matter. Powell was kicked off Trump's legal team after promoting a number of fringe conspiracy theories about election fraud. Barr's announcement signals another significant break with the president, who continues to insist the election was somehow stolen from him. If I thought a special counsel at this stage was the right tool and was appropriate, I would name one. But I haven't, and I'm not going to. US Attorney General William Barr
US President Donald Trump continues to falsely insist that the election was stolen from him. However, his campaign has lost more than two dozen lawsuits seeking to contest the results and halt ballot counting and certification. According to Business Insider, he's also lost two recounts in Georgia and in Wisconsin. Recently, Trump accused the US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation of failing to help him uncover systemic voter fraud. But Attorney General Bill Barr begged to differ with Trump on Tuesday, claiming the DOJ and FBI have no evidence of substantial fraud in the 2020 election. Barr's break with Trump is particularly notable given that he has been in lockstep with Trump's narrative for months. Barr pushed a baseless theory that expanding mail voting would lead to foreign countries flooding American voters with counterfeit mail ballots.
The Daily Beast is reporting that Donald Trump is considering hosting a campaign event for a 2024 presidential bid in January. The event might fall on the same day as President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20. The Daily Beast cited sources close to the president. They reported that Trump is attempting to stay relevant even as the world prepares for a Biden administration. Business Insider reports the discussions of a 2024 campaign event mark the latest move in Trump's attempt to derail the start of Biden's presidency.
