Displaced Azerbaijanis return to Agdam after Karabakh truce

Description

Baku (Azerbaijan), Dec 13 (EFE), (Camera: Ilya U. Topper).- "I don't want to see it!". Professor Aide Hüseyinova stifles tears when being asked if she wants to look for what was her home among the ruins of Agdam, a ghost town on the edge of Upper Karabakh, occupied by Armenia in 1993 and reconquered by Azerbaijan in last October. "Going back to Agdam has made me cry a lot, and I don't want to see my old house," says Hüseyinova in front of the city's mosque, the only building still standing. The rest of the city, which before the war had 40,000 inhabitants, is completely destroyed, to the point that it has received the nickname "Hiroshima of the Caucasus". It was a prosperous city, says Mehemmmed Memmedov Nezeroglu, 58, who has returned to the city to meet a press delegation outside the mosque. "There were fields, factories, vineyards, we produced champagne," he added. FOOTAGE OF FUZULI, AGDAM AND BAKU. But the war affected us a lot.
