"The year was 1978, UK inflation hit a six-year low, the Bee Gees dominated the charts, while flared trousers and bouffant hair was the height of fashion. It was also the year that Mazda unveiled the RX-7, a car that played a vital role in establishing Mazda’s reputation for building celebrated driver’s cars. In the 1970s car makers the world over found themselves faced with the grim reality of a global fuel crisis. Soaring petrol prices meant few drivers wanted to own big, gas-guzzling V8 sports cars, so a new approach was needed. Responding to the challenging environment, Mazda’s brightest brains set about creating a new kind of sports car – one that would be smaller, lighter, more efficient and – most important of all – fun to drive. So in the home market of Japan, Mazda revealed the ground-breaking RX-7. Its compact yet powerful rotary engine allowed the power unit to be mounted lower and further back resulting in a car that set new standards in road holding. The formula was a hit with customers and critics alike. Car and Driver magazine, one of America’s most influential car magazines, placed the Mazda RX-7 on its annual Ten Best list five times."

Mazda is making only minor changes to the CX-5 for 2020. The company's i-Activsense suite of driver-assistance features is now standard across the lineup and includes automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlamps, and more. All models receive a new key fob we expect to match that of the new Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback, as well as Mazda's newly updated fonts on interior switches and exterior badging. Grand Touring Reserve and Signature models receive a new 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen display. The CX-5's standard 187-hp four-cylinder engine has great throttle response when pulling away from stoplights or hustling around town, so it feels quicker than it actually is. It's at higher speeds, such as when trying to pass or merge onto the freeway, that it feels underpowered. The 250-hp turbocharged version we tested provided much quicker acceleration, shooting from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. While the turbo engine also pairs with a snappy six-speed automatic transmission, it can only be had with all-wheel drive.

In the pursuit of unprecedented performance and the output needed for the Gr.3 class, it follows in the footsteps of the former MAZDA 787B engine concept and mounts a 4-rotor engine, reborn using the latest SKYACTIV technology, in its lightweight chassis.The base vehicle "MAZDA RX-VISION" is a concept car that was revealed at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Based on the “KODO -Soul of Motion-” design theme, it was designed to be the most beautiful FR sports car that Mazda could conceive of and was equipped with a next-generation "SKYACTIV-R” rotary engine (RE). The model embodies a dream vehicle that Mazda hopes to make it real one day.
