New Lexus RZ 450e Direct4 tech animation

Description

Lexus is introducing new systems that optimise the dynamic potential of electrified powertrains. DIRECT4, featured in the new RX 500h and RZ 450e models, is a Lexus-exclusive technology that instantly balances the drive torque delivered to the front and rear axles, giving optimum traction in all driving conditions, linear acceleration and enhanced cornering and vehicle posture. As well as performance and handling it will also contribute to greater ride comfort, particularly for rear seat passengers. One Motion Grip is a steer-by-wire system that dispenses with mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Set for introduction on the new RZ 450e, it will transform the driving experience, eliminating the need for hand-over-hand turns of the wheel so manoeuvres are made easier and more precise. Low-speed agility and highway stability are also improved. The system makes automatic micro-corrections when driving over uneven surfaces.

Maximum comfort and maximum driving pleasure: With the intelligent DIRECT4 all-wheel drive, the Lexus RZ sets new standards. The technology automatically adjusts the torque between the front and rear axles to the road conditions within milliseconds. The braking force on all four wheels reacts to the road grip and thus also improves the energy efficiency of the electric car.The premium brand found inspiration in nature - and not just for the vehicle design: the cheetah, as the fastest animal in the world, made a lasting impression on chief engineer Takashi Watanabe. When hunting, the big cat sprints at lightning speed and its body moves in all possible directions, while the head remains stable and the gaze unwavering.Such properties are secured in the Lexus RZ by the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive: It gives the model exceptionally good stability and tilt control. The vehicle leans backwards less when accelerating and forwards less when braking. The result: fewer head movements by the occupants. The driver enjoys a more stable view, the comfort for all passengers - especially in the rear - increases. In addition to better control, reduced body jerking and therefore an overall smoother ride, DIRECT4 offers other benefits such as powerful and smooth acceleration, excellent traction under acceleration and on slippery surfaces, better cornering stability and reassuringly confident deceleration. The variable torque distribution also ensures a precise, linear and natural response to any input from the driver. All of these attributes reinforce the RZ's core driving characteristics, which are also the cornerstones of the Lexus Driving Signature: confidence, control and comfort.DIRECT4 continuously ensures an optimal balance of the drive forces between the front and rear axles. Each axis is controlled independently. Sensors constantly send information about wheel speed, longitudinal inclination and steering angle to the control unit. To maximize traction and grip, DIRECT4 reacts at lightning speed: the torque distribution between the front and rear axles can be adjusted within milliseconds - faster than with any mechanical system.

The new RZ 450e is Lexus' first electric vehicle to be designed from the ground up. The model not only has a battery-electric drive instead of a conventional motor, but also fully exploits the potential of new technologies to increase performance and driving pleasure in equal measure, true to the ""Lexus Electrified"" philosophy. The vehicle was extensively tested and tuned on the racetrack at the Shimoyama Center in Japan, the future global headquarters of Lexus.First and foremost, the new RZ is a true Lexus – it has all the qualities of performance and craftsmanship that the brand is known for; with a special focus on driving pleasure with the Lexus Driving Signature. The company has used its extensive experience in electrification to combine the benefits of a battery electric model (BEV) with the refinement typical of the brand, creating a unique driving experience.Lexus is using the new E-Axle drives in the RZ for the first time: compact motor units at the front and rear that work together with the new Lexus DIRECT4 all-wheel drive. The new platform, specially developed for electric vehicles, offers excellent body rigidity, a low center of gravity and a long wheelbase - thus creating the conditions for precise handling characteristics and direct response. The optional ""One Motion Grip"" steer-by-wire system in combination with the innovative Yoke steering wheel will be introduced from 2025. This enables even simpler and more precise steering. The powerful lithium-ion battery unit is fully integrated into the chassis under the cab floor; their quality is closely controlled to ensure long-term performance.
